Italy Has No Road Rules!

Other than drive on the wrong side of the road, there appears to be no rules.  Bicycles, cars, truck and walkers share the road and in Reggio Emilia, it all seems to work out pretty simply.  Many of the old roads are teeny tiny and some no bigger than an alleyway at home, but cars zoom up and down, as do pedestrians and bikes!

At one stage I had to back up the road I was walking down because it was completely filled by a tiny car coming the other way!  Cars simply fold in their mirrors if the road gets to skinny and they carry on, then pop the mirrors out again when they are through!!??  You step out of a shop onto the road and a car is doing about 40k past you (actually that might be an exaggeration, but I have not ever shared a space with cars that determined to get along in such a confined area
!)

On the motorways, the speed limit seems a bit indeterminable as well.  I think it is 140 km but I am really not sure.  Just quietly, I don't think the Italians are either!

Too slow with the camera, but that little car just squeezed up this alley and out!  I feel as though I could stretch out and put my feet on one wall and my outstretched arms on the other and simply walk up the wall!  How did a car get through??
