On one of our wanderings we discovered the Public Library (we think!!!???) and went inside to have a look. It was a 4 storey building, built in what has turned out to be quite a common build- solid high walls forming a rectangle around the outside with a garden or grass area in the middle. Many of these buildings have a driveway into the centre, but not so this one. Once inside, there was only one door, which was locked, leading to the grass interior, (!!!!!) about the size of a full size basketball court. The grass area on the inside appeared to have stairs in one corner leading down under the building (intriguing...???) and a grate thing in the middle that was not a drain....????? I guess it was possible there was a pet Lion or something there that we did not see, but it seems to me a huge waste of space and atomsphere. Maybe grass is endangered around here?? We did the loop of the building looking out all the windows, mainly
because it was so interesting to actually 'see' inside some of these
buildings. I can't help thinking the design has something to do with
defending territory, because there is no way marauding enemies could
scale these walls or even perhaps knock down some of these doors!
This picture is not the library, but gives you some idea of what is inside the walls. You will have seen from previous pictures how it is high walled and it seems as if everything from the outside walls is total building area almost like apartment blocks, but no!
This amazing painting was on the roof, above the high stairwell in what we think was the library. Amazing- and the photo does not do it justice! The colours are incredibly rich and warm and the painting itself seems to be almost three dimensional.
Rho, if you are reading, you will know what this style of painting is called, so enlighten us???
This is a statue in the main square, performing a traditional Maori pukana! See!??? We Kiwi's got around, even in the 10th Century!!!
....and then below....
randomly I turn to take a photo of members of our study group and catch Alex and Iain
........errrrr...... copying the statue..?
........errrrr...... performing the traditional Maori Pukana...??
........errrr..... photo bombing...?
........errrr.....just being mean...?
SERIOUSLY????!!!

My Italian art history is pretty sketchy now but I think the style is called rococo. It has lots ribbons and pretty detail. Gratuitous photo of MY girl appreciated. Looking like so much fun.
